About us
The Bethlen Gábor Hungarian Language School fosters the learning of the Hungarian language.
We promote an understanding and preservation of the Hungarian language, heritage and culture through language courses taught in an educational setting for the benefit of students residing in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
We offer progressively structured language courses at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels.
The History of the Hungarian language school in Calgary
The Gábor Bethlen Hungarian Language School started in September 2001 at the Calvin Hungarian Reformed Church in Calgary by Károly Gödöllei, then president of the Bethlen Historical Society, and his wife Éva Gödöllei.
At that time, the school was still called the Hungarian School.
From September 2002, the Bethlen Historical Society took over running the school but classes continued on in the church building.
In the school year starting in September 2004, the so-called A “credit group” got started, where students could also earn a high school credit point accepted by Alberta Learning.
The goal of the school has not changed since its foundation:
Providing professional Hungarian language education to children of Hungarian descent living in Calgary and area.
Of course, the school welcomes those who are not of Hungarian origin and want to learn Hungarian.

Megkülönböztető megtiszteltetés számomra, hogy a Calgaryban 2004-óta sikeresen működő Bethlen Gábor Magyar Nyelviskola fontosságáról írhatok.
A mai technológia korában a világ egyre zsugorodik, ezért azoknak, akik ebben a világban érvényesülni akarnak, több nyelvet kell ismerniük. Nekünk, kanadai magyaroknak, anyanyelvünk megőrzése, annak továbbadása nemcsak hazafias kötelességünk, hanem számatalan lehetőség forrása is.
Joggal büszkék lehetünk arra, hogy ez a kis magyar nemzet oly sok Nobel-díjast termelt ki, akik a tudomány és az irodalom terén is maradandót tudtak alkotni.
A gyermekek magyar nyelvre való megtanítása óriási felelősséget hárít a szülőkre. A rohanó napok szorításában ez nem könnyű, de megoldható és a család összetartozása szempontjából is gyümölcsöző feladat. Ezzel mi, magyarok tartozunk kultúrbölcsőnknek.
Közös kincsünk: nyelvünk, irodalmunk, történelmünk ismerete, tisztelete és ezen ismeretek a következő generációnak való továbbítása biztosította magyarságunk több, mint ezeréves fennállását.
Köszönettel és hálával tartozunk a Bethlen Gábor Magyar Nyelviskola alapítóinak, a nevelő-tanító munkát évek óta végzőknek az áldozatos és eredményes munkájukért valamint a Bethlen Történeti Társaságnak az iskola fenntartásáért.
